A truly charming little dammuso set into the dreaming countryside of Pantelleria island with a stunning view of the Faraglione rock and the sea. A typical example of how cautious restoration, care for details and the passion for the original countryside may re-create the spirit of Pantelleria in bygone times, which is rural and sober. An atmosphere of peacefulness, of quiet simplicity, far removed from the world.
A trail beginning at the parking area winds first through a large lavender field whose scent pervades the air, then through an equally large vineyard and leads finally up to the house and the big, cane-roofed terrace. From here the eye sweeps downwards to the jagged coastline and the sea; in the immediate foreground there is another well-cared for vine field. The terrace, surrounded by delicately scented herb bushes, has a barbecue corner, a big dining table and chairs and the classical stone benches covered with cushions. A door leads into the living-room with cane furnishings and TV/music stand; on the left a sliding door opens into the small but comfortable kitchen all done in smooth grey concrete and with tiled worktops. The window over the sink overlooks the garden and the sea beyond. On the right side of the living room is a small hallway giving access to the sleeping quarters: a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, both done in an original rose colour, a second double bedroom which can be transformed in a two-bed room, and yet another bathroom. Both rooms have ample storage space set into the wall, the windows overlook the garden and the mountain beyond. The surrounding areaAt about 300 m is the tiny village of Khamma with its bakery and small supermarket. In the near distance is Pantelleria’s landmark, the“Arc of the Elephant” rock formation, easily reached by car (8 minutes from the house) and featuring flat rocks for easy access to the water. Following the public road to Pantelleria village you come across the minuscule harbor of Gadir, just a smattering of little houses, a few boats and, immediately by the seashore, two or three stone basins gathering the hot water welling up from the island’s volcanic core.
